Mountain Biking and Cycling

Brechfa Forest has three mountain bike trails designed by the famous Rowan Sorrell (accomplished rider and trial designer) to maximise the contours of Brechfa Forest. Rowan explains, “The sheer scale of Brechfa Forest makes for longer trails, something that no other mountain biking centre in Wales has to offer.”

The 22km Gorlech red route provides a hard, fast, all weather surface which becomes more and more exciting as your skill level and speed progresses. The trail successfully mixes a scenic route with sculpted berms and huge switchbacks, step up jumps and tabletops.

The 20km Raven black route will be opening at the end of May/early June in 2008. It includes the longest single span pole bridge in the UK, (15 meters long, 6 meters above the ground.), rock gardens, low shore and sections of natural trail. The brochures for the route have not yet been published but guests will be provided with maps.

The 9.2 km Derwen green route is designed for inexperienced mountain bike riders and family groups. Weaving through the forest you will encounter steady climbs and fun descents.

Want to plan a week on different trails? The Afan Forest trails and the network of mountain bike trail in the Brecon Beacons National Park are all within easy reach.

The accommodation has been designed with mountain bikers and cyclists in mind. As well as lockable storage for bikes, there is a bike washdown area, and large drying room so that at least you can set out dry and comfortable.

If you prefer to avoid using motorised transport during your stay, there is a network of quiet lanes as well as bridleways and byways in the area ranging over open common land and farm land which can be used to build circular trails. I have prepared a number of leaflets describing different circuits with themes ranging from spectacular scenery, to local history or trails visiting local pubs. Copies are available from the barn with proceeds going to projects to supporting local rights of way groups.
